Disability Insurance Awareness Month

{2 minutes to read}  With May being Disability Insurance Awareness Month, I wanted to focus on disability insurance — which is in so many ways the Achilles heel of a financial plan. Too many times, people rely on their company or government benefits like Social Security or state disability, which don’t necessarily provide adequate protection.

Think of it this way — If you had a golden goose in your basement, and it was churning out $250,000 a year, would you insure that goose? Too many times people insure the golden eggs from the goose, the material well-being such as:

  • Homes
  • Cars
  • Valuables
  • The business

They don’t, however, insure what creates those golden eggs. That is why it is so very important for people to understand their disability benefits.

Below are links to a couple of very brief videos, the first of which describes the very basics about disability income insurance. The second is a real-life disability story with a positive ending provided by disability insurance. Disability insurance can be used in businesses to help with a buy/sell agreement by creating a pool of money to buy out a business owner in the event of a disability.

The Basics: Disability Income Insurance

How a Disability Income Insurance Policy Changed a Dentist’s Life

Again, disability insurance is the Achilles heel of a financial plan. I urge everybody to review their benefits and give us a call to discuss how we can help protect your most valuable asset.
